Dave Lichten has been involved with photography since 1973, both artistically and journalistically. For the past several years he has been covering fire and rescue operations both on the ground and in the air,
flying with LA Air Ops, giving him a rare opportunity to spend time with the personnel on and between missions. He states “On those flights I cover everything that I can. It’s a perfect opportunity to cover nature,
geology, scenery, etc. from the air.” Lichten is a member of the Arson Watch, a volunteer organization operating in the Santa Monica Mountains as the eyes and ears of the fire and sheriff departments. He is also active in the Wildfire Research Network.
His work has appeared in Vertical magazine, Malibu Times magazine and newspaper, Blumonky magazine and others.
Lichten states “There is a difference between capturing an image and creating an image. In the first you are there, recording what you see, and in the second you are recording what you see inside yourself. One can be called ‘journalism’ and the other ‘art’”.
Lichten uses the term “ComPainting” to describe painting on the computer, using the camera as an input device to introduce images to be later integrated into a larger work.
Lichten’s work in progress includes a large format book dedicated to LA Air Ops featuring photographs of all activities out of Burton heliport. Another project is a set of computer paintings entitled “Images, By God!” inspired by naturally occurring formations in stone.
Dave’s Disclosure: “Being a teacher first and foremost, disclosure of techniques is what I’m all about. I spend hours experimenting and refining techniques which I’ll pass on.” Dave’s talents and capabilities span media and disciplines. He is a world-class concert guitarist, composer for theater, movies TV and radio, and music ethnologist as well as a luthier and restorer of antique indigenous instruments, and a gourmet chef.
