TIM MANTOANI, Advertising, Commercial & Sports Photographer will present “Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends”
Since December, 2006 Tim has been working on his personal project, Behind Photographs. Shot on the unique and mammoth format of 20 x 24 Polaroid, each image captures a historic photographer and one of their favorite or iconic images.
Join us as Tim presents the story of how his project has evolved the process of shooting and the stories behind both the most iconic photographs and photographers of our time.
Tim Mantoani remembers the moment he first held a 35mm camera in his hand and raised it to his eye to take a photograph of his high school counselor. His love of image making drew him to Brooks Institute of Photography, where he specialized in advertising photography.
After graduation he became studio manager for renowned photographic educator Dean Collins. He opened his own San Diego studio in 1995.
Mantoani has photographed hundreds of professional athletes and his credits include Sports Illustrated, Newsweek and ESPN The Magazine, as well as ad campaigns for Coca-Cola, DirecTV and The Coors Brewing Company.
Today, when Tim is not shooting on assignment, he is documenting venerable lens-men and women who have collectively captured decades of culture and celebrity with their own cameras.
Legendary rock photographers Jim Marshall and Dan Kramer have sat for 20 x 24-inch Polaroid portraits, as have Walter Iooss, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Peter Turner, Mark Seliger, Mary Ellen Mark, and Roberto Salas.
Tim’s enthusiasm for the medium of photography is undiminished by the changes he has seen during his career. For him it’s not work so much as a mission. He sees the story in each face and in each place, and lives to give them voice through his work.
