IAN SHIVE, Outdoor Nature and Travel Photographer, presents “Photographing Exotic Corners of the World, and Hairy, Scary Spiders” at Clickers & Flickers' photography-networking dinner lecture.

Discover and share in the journey of Ian Shive's landscape, travel and nature photography through a dynamic digital slideshow and lecture. Ian will not only describe the techniques employed in creating some of his favorite images but also the stories behind the lens. Ian will also share, for the first time, images from his June expedition into the Malaysian rain forest. Traveling alone in a Muslim country post-9/11 offers plenty of challenges by itself, but Ian's "Journey of the Fire Flies" held a special challenge as it would require hours alone in the rain forest at night, often times laying on the ground in the pitch black in order to capture photos of a rare bioluminescent mushroom or a stalking spider as large as his lens.

Ian Shive has established himself at the forefront of outdoor lifestyle and landscape photography. His images have appeared in publications spanning the globe including National Geographic Traveler, Men’s Journal and Outside Magazine. His photograph of Zion National Park is on the cover of Popular Photography (January 2008). For the last five years, he has documented the world’s diverse landscapes and the relationship that mankind has had with nature. Always with an eye towards conservation. Shive is also proud to work regularly with groups such as the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), The Nature Conservancy and The Sierra Club. Shive’s pursuit of stunning imagery has taken him to the far corners of the earth, ranging from the canopy of Malaysia’s rainforests to the underwater ecosystems of the Channel Islands in California.

Prior to his full-time career in photography, Shive worked in marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment's Columbia Pictures for over eight years. There he worked as a publicist on films such as the Spider-Man franchise, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Pursuit of Happiness and over 40 other major motion pictures. This parallel existence of a successful Hollywood career and a developing career as a photographer - often finding himself lost in the Rocky Mountains on a Sunday afternoon and by Monday night standing on a red carpet premiere - has been instrumental in forming Shive's unique perspective on the world around him. Shive is now combining his intimate knowledge of branding and marketing to his imagery, helping companies develop their own identity through the use of stunning photography.

Ian Shive is most proud of his role in the preservation of our wild lands. He believes that the powerful medium of photography has shaped our view of the environment in the past and can continue to shape those views in the future. Shive currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) in Los Angeles, and is a member of the Travel and Outdoor Photographers Alliance (TOPA) and North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA ).
